Third Sunday Evening Lecture Series
October's Lecture signals the start of a series on each 3rd Sunday evening
from October - April
Martin Luther’s "Power of And"
"This lecture will focus on the years 1523-1526 as formative years
that laid the foundation for Lutheran church music and, in fact,
for liturgical church music in a much broader context.
I’ll focus on two seminal liturgical/musical writings by Luther:
his 1523 Formula missae (his order for the Latin Mass),
and his 1526 Deutsche Messe(his order for the German Mass).
The third phenomenon I will cover is the birth of the chorale in the year 1524:
the publication of the first three printed hymn collections,
two of them with texts and melodies only, the third being polyphonic
settings of this newly emerging genre. It was truly a burst of poetic
and musical creativity—all fueled by Luther’s love for music and his
conviction that music was the way for 'the word of God to be among the people.' "
